Relationships can be some of the greatest blessings in life—but they can also bring some of the heaviest burdens. When we avoid honesty, take on what isn’t ours, or blur the lines of responsibility, things quickly become messy, one-sided, and exhausting. In this message, Pastor Sean Sears unpacks how boundaries aren’t barriers that push people away, but guardrails that make love stronger and relationships healthier.

LINES THAT SET YOU FREE

Why Every Relationship Needs Boundaries

Big Idea: Boundaries create space for healing, honesty, and freedom in our relationships—even the messy ones.

Stop Trying to Force Everyone to Your Side of the Line

[Luke 15:12–13]
“The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed… A few days later… he wasted all his money in wild living.”

[Luke 15:20]
“While he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”

[Galatians 6:5]
“For we are each responsible for our own conduct.”

[Proverbs 19:19]
“Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty. If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again.”

  • True love doesn’t rescue—it releases.

  • Rescue breeds repetition.

  • Jesus loved the rich young ruler but let him walk away (Mark 10:21–22).

  • Don’t confuse control with care.

Build Bridges When Lines Have Separated You

[Matthew 18:15–17]
“If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense… if they listen, you have won them back.”

[Ephesians 4:15]
“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ…”

[Proverbs 27:6]
“Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.”

[James 5:19–20]
“If someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back… whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.”

  • Boundaries aren’t rejection—they make space for honesty, healing, and reconciliation.

  • Speak truth in love.

  • Talk to the person, not about them.

Summary:

  1. Boundaries are an act of love, not rejection.

  2. Restoration happens when truth is spoken, not avoided.

Draw the Line Between the Old and New You

[Romans 6:4–11]
“For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism… so we also may live new lives… consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.”

[Romans 3:21–25a]
“We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ… For everyone has sinned… Yet God declares that we are righteous… through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.”

[Colossians 2:12]
“For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life…”

  • Baptism is the ultimate boundary line—separating the old life from the new.

  • Jesus doesn’t improve you; He remakes you (2 Corinthians 5:17).

  • Baptism is the starting line, not the finish line.

Closing Truth

The most powerful boundary you’ll ever draw is the line between your old life and your new life in Christ.
