Where You End and I Begin

Big Idea: From the very beginning, God uses boundaries to create life and order—not to restrict us, but to bless us. Boundaries are a part of God’s original design for your peace, freedom, and clarity.

Key Points:

Take Ownership of What God Assigned to You

[Galatians 6:5] “For we are each responsible for our own conduct.”

[Romans 14:12] “Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.”

[1 Thessalonians 4:11] “Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before.”

  • You are not responsible for anyone’s emotions or outcomes, but you ARE responsible for yours
  • This doesn’t mean we don’t help people—we are ALWAYS ready to help people, knowing we can’t FIX them

[Galatians 6:2-3] “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.”

[Proverbs 27:12] “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.”

Jesus Modeled This:

[John 5:6] “When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, ‘Would you like to get well?'”

  • Jesus invited people to take ownership of their healing—not just receive it passively
  • Jesus didn’t take responsibility to fix everyone, neither should you

Let Go of What God Didn’t Assign to You

[Matthew 11:28-29] “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.'”

[Psalm 55:22] “Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.”

  • I can control what I do, say and dwell on but I don’t control what happens after that
  • We aren’t capable of fixing all of our own problems, let alone everyone else’s
  • My job isn’t to make the thing happen

Jesus Practiced This:

[Luke 18:22-23] “When Jesus heard his answer, he said, ‘There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was very rich.”

  • Jesus let the rich young ruler walk away
  • Jesus didn’t chase him. He allowed the man to carry the weight of his own decision

Guard Your Heart Without Feeling Guilty

[Proverbs 4:23] “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

  • Boundaries help us protect our peace, joy and clarity
  • Time with God clarifies this and helps us guard our heart

[Mark 1:35-38] “Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. Later Simon and the others went out to find him. When they found him, they said, ‘Everyone is looking for you.’ But Jesus replied, ‘We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.'”

[Matthew 6:34] “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

  • This was a daily habit Jesus used to center the day around what God wanted for him
  • Fear and Faith are twins; both are confidence in something that hasn’t happened yet
  • Today is my focus – doing the next right thing

Application:

Ask yourself:

  1. What am I carrying that God never asked me to carry?
    • Someone else’s reaction?
    • A responsibility you’re not actually responsible for?
    • The outcome of someone else’s choices?
  2. What’s mine to own?
    • Your calendar
    • Your emotions
    • Your calling
    • Your next step of obedience
  3. Let God carry what only He can carry
    • Some of us need to stop playing savior and start trusting the real one

“You are not responsible for everything. But you are responsible for you. That’s not a burden—it’s a gift. That’s where freedom starts.”

This week: Name what’s yours, release what’s not, and trust what belongs to God.
