MESSAGE NOTES

Every single week we love using stories to communicate the truth that we find in the Bible. Jesus did this too in his ministry

In this series we take popular movies and we use them to illustrate biblical themes and truths!

Today, we are going to be looking at one of my favorite movies, “What about Bob”

Summary

Before going on vacation, self-involved psychiatrist Dr. Leo Marvin, played by Richard Dreyfuss has the misfortune of taking on a new patient: Bob Wiley.

Bob, played by Bill Murray, is an exemplar of neediness and a compendium of phobias, and follows Dr. Marvin to his family’s country house at none other then Lake Winnipisaukee in New Hampshire!

Dr. Marvin tries to get him to leave; the trouble is, everyone love Bob.

As his oblivious patient makes himself at home, Dr. Marvin loses his professional composure and, before long, may be ready for the loony bin himself.

What if I told you that our life is not meant to be spent at 100mph, 7 days a week, for 365 days a year?

What if I told you that God actually gives us a command in the Bible that we need to stop, rest, and reset not every few months… but once a week?

What is sabbath?

[Exodus 20:8-11]

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”

[Exodus 20:11]

God rested on the seventh day. 6 days he worked. One day He rested.

Rest and sabbath restore us.

[Matthew 11:28-30]

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Life invades our rest.

[Luke 10:38-40]

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.  Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

[Exodus 20:8]

He says remember the sabbath day by keeping it holy.

We need to create a habit of sabbath.
