TRAINING GROUND

Big Idea: Sabbath reminds us that God is trustworthy, and it trains us to live like it’s true.

Key Points:

[1 Timothy 4:7-8] “Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”

What is Sabbath?

  • Means “cease” or “desist” — God’s invitation to regularly stop and cease from work

[Genesis 2:1-3] “So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.”

[Mark 2:27] “Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.'”

Sabbath Trains Us to Trust God

[Colossians 1:17] “He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.”

[Deuteronomy 8:3] “Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

  • We easily forget that we’re not God
  • Our refusal to rest reveals the belief: “I am the provider. If I stop, everything unravels.”
  • Sabbath reminds us we are finite and made to rely on God
  • Our worth is not in productivity, but in our identity as God’s children

“Sabbath pushes back against the lie that everything depends on you.”

Sabbath Trains Us to Delight in God’s Goodness

[Ecclesiastes 3:12-13] “So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.”

[Exodus 31:16-17] “The people of Israel must keep the Sabbath day by observing it from generation to generation. This is a covenant obligation for all time. It is a permanent sign of my covenant with the people of Israel. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day he stopped working and was refreshed.”

  • We don’t often make time to enjoy what God has given us
  • God gives refreshing when we stop and delight in Him

Sabbath Trains Us to Remember God’s Redemption

[Deuteronomy 5:1,12,15] “Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, ‘Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them! Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the Lord your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the Lord your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day.'”

[Hebrews 4:9] “So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.”

  • Reminds us we were once slaves to sin but have been rescued by Jesus
  • Salvation isn’t earned, it’s received
  • We don’t need to strive to be good enough

“Jesus is our Sabbath Rest!”

What Do We Need to Do?

[Colossians 2:16-17] “So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality.”

  • Sabbath is not a legalistic burden but freedom to stop, rest, and trust God

Ask yourself:

  • What keeps you from stopping?
  • Where do you need to say “no” so you can say “yes” to rest?
  • How can you reshape your calendar to include rest, worship, and delight?

[Matthew 11:28] “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

“Sabbath reminds you to trust God, delight in His Goodness, and look to Him for rest.”
