We all want genuine relationships, but when it requires us to open up and be vulnerable, it’s easy to hold back and stay guarded. And while everyday friendships are good, walking closely with people who share your faith is the environment God uses to bring encouragement, wisdom, and growth to your life.  This message unpacks why community is crucial for becoming who God wants you to be—and how deep, authentic relationships can push you outside your comfort zone in the best way. Just like in the gym, growth comes when you’re willing to be stretched.

TRAINING GROUND

Biblical Community

Big Idea: Biblical community isn’t a side dish in the Christian life. It’s part of the main course. You don’t need more willpower. You need a training plan. And that plan includes people.

Key Points:

Common Resistances to Biblical Community

  1. Fear of vulnerability – we don’t want to be judged
  2. Busyness – I don’t have time
  3. Past hurt – I’ve been burned before
  4. Misunderstanding – thinking biblical community is just another social group

“If we don’t name those reasons, they will silently sabotage your spiritual growth.”

Resistance: “I’m afraid of being vulnerable”

Biblical Response: Choose Grace over Guardedness

[Galatians 6:2] “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.”

  • We live in a culture that celebrates independence, but God’s Word teaches we are created to depend on Him and help carry each other’s burdens
  • Guarding ourselves might keep us from getting hurt, but it also keeps us from receiving help, healing, and encouragement
  • Being vulnerable isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s where real connection begins

Resistance: “I’m too busy”

Biblical Response: Clear the Calendar for What Counts

[Hebrews 10:24-25] “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”

  • You will never “find” time for biblical community—you have to make it
  • God’s Word makes it clear: meeting together and encouraging one another is not optional for a healthy Christian life
  • Our calendars reveal what we truly value

Resistance: “I’ve been hurt before”

Biblical Response: Cultivate Christlike Care

[Colossians 3:13] “Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.”

[James 5:16] “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

  • Community will get messy—Scripture tells us to expect it
  • Forgiveness isn’t optional for a follower of Jesus
  • Healing often comes through honest, grace-filled relationships, not through isolation

Resistance: “I thought community was just social”

Biblical Response: Connect for Christlike Change

[Acts 2:42-47] “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer… They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity — all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.”

  • Biblical community isn’t just hanging out—it’s being formed together into the likeness of Jesus
  • The early church was devoted to learning God’s Word together, praying together, worshiping together, and practicing generosity together
  • This counterculture community becomes a powerful witness to a watching world

Next Steps:

Ask yourself:

  • Which of these 4 objections hits closest to home for you?
  • Where might God be inviting you to retrain your heart around His vision for community?

One next step this week:

  • Share something real with a trusted believer (share the last 10% you normally hold back)
  • Clear your calendar for what counts—make community non-negotiable
  • Pray for God to soften your heart toward someone who has hurt you
  • Join a life group and give biblical community another chance

“Don’t let what’s hard keep you from what’s holy.”
