Sexuality is a big topic in our culture today and history shows that it has always been. It’s used to sell everything from cars to chewing gum. It’s talked about in our circles of friends, our work, and at our schools. But why does it seems that churches and Christians have such a big problem with sex? In today’s teaching, we take a closer look at how our culture approaches the topic of sex and how it affecting us. And by taking a look at what the Bible actually says about sex, we work to clear up confusion around this topic and explain why God even cares about how we handle ourselves sexually.

BIG BUT QUESTION: I’m fine with Christianity BUT why are they so against sex?

There seems to be a lot of confusion on the role of sexuality and what God says about it.

  • There are cults that carry signs saying, “God hates the sexually immoral”.
  • Some of us are obsessed with sex and it’s the dominant filter through which we make decisions.
  • Some of us have lustful addictions that we are hiding from everyone around us which are creating an insurmountable amount of guilt and shame.
  • Some churches seem to focus solely on homosexual sin.
  • Other churches say that the church needs to evolve in their understanding about sexuality.

Sex Was God’s Idea

Genesis 1:26-28

  • God can’t be against something that He came up with.

Sex Has Boundaries

John 3:16-17

  • No one is excluded from the opportunity to find Grace.

Ephesians 4:17-24

  • The entire church of Ephesus was filled with people with VERY complicated sexual histories. This didn’t cause God to walk away from them.

1 Corinthians 7:1-5

Why Does God Even Care About My Sexuality?

Sex Is A Metaphor

Ephesians 5:21-26

Who does God give these instructions to? His kids.

Who does He call to represent Him in the world? His kids

1 John 3:4-9

APPLICATION:

What should I do with this?

  • LOVE everyone indiscriminately
  • Give them the chance to turn from sin and follow Jesus
  • Examine our hearts to root out all traces of personal sin
  • Lovingly encourage other Christians to do the same
