Why do we keep going back to the same old habits, reactions, and patterns even when we want to live differently? Some struggles have been part of our lives for so long that they can start to feel like they’re simply who we are. In this message, discover how following Jesus changes the way you see your past, why old patterns don’t have to define your future, and how you can start taking practical steps toward living differently.

Why Do I Keep Going Back to My Old Ways?

1 Peter, Week 2

Big Idea

Holy living isn’t how you earn your identity in Christ. It’s what your identity in Christ produces.

Every family passes down patterns we never consciously chose — some funny, some painful. When Jesus saves you, He doesn’t just give you new beliefs. He gives you a new Father, a new family, a new identity. Christianity isn’t Behave → Believe → Belong. It’s: You believe, so you belong — therefore you become who He’s already made you to be.

1 Peter 1:13 (NLT) — “So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.”

1. You Belong to a Holy Family

1 Peter 1:15-16 (NLT) — “But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, ‘You must be holy because I am holy.'”

Peter calls them obedient children — family language. Not “obey so God will adopt you,” but “you’re already His child, now live like it.” God rescued Israel before He gave them the Law. Grace comes first. Identity comes first. Then transformation.

Holiness isn’t auditioning for the family. Holiness is learning to live like you belong to the family.

2. You Were Bought at a Real Price

1 Peter 1:18-19 (NLT) — “…you know that God paid a ransom to save you… And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”

Cost communicates value. God didn’t redeem you with silver or gold — He redeemed you with Jesus. And He didn’t only rescue you from the penalty of your old life; He’s rescuing you from the patterns of your old life.

Your history may explain you. But in Christ, your history no longer gets to name you. It came to me — but by the grace of Jesus, it doesn’t have to go through me.

3. You Are Free to Love Without Faking It

1 Peter 1:22 (NLT) — “You were purified by obeying the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.”

Peter gets practical: get rid of deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and unkind speech — things that make real love impossible. Like Joseph with the brothers who betrayed him, freedom doesn’t wait for an apology that may never come.

1 Peter 2:2 (NLT) — “Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation.”

Whatever you feed grows. Feed your new nature with the Word of God, and you begin becoming who you already are.

Three Things Before You Leave

  1. Name it. What’s the old pattern? Don’t say “I need to do better” — name the specific thing.
  2. Replace it. Find God’s truth that speaks directly to that pattern. Put it where you’ll see it daily.
  3. Take one step. Who do you need to call, forgive, or confess to? Don’t leave with a vague intention — give obedience an address.

You don’t obey Jesus hoping that someday He’ll make you His. If you’re in Christ, you already belong — bought and paid for with the precious blood of Jesus. So stop living like an orphan when your Father has already brought you home.
