Joy is something we all long for, but many of us assume it has to wait until life gets easier. In this Christmas Eve message, Sean Sears shares how the joy announced in the Christmas story isn’t tied to perfect circumstances, but to God stepping into real life with real people. You’ll discover where lasting joy actually comes from and why it’s available even when life feels unfinished.

THE WEARY WORLD REJOICES
Week 4 (Christmas Eve): Joy for the Redeemed
23/24 December 2025
Joy for the Redeemed
Big Idea: We don’t find joy because life gets easier—we find joy because God stepped into our darkness and brought salvation.

Why Christmas Matters
A Christmas Eve service is unlike any other.
People come carrying joy, grief, exhaustion, excitement, hope, resignation, peace, and nostalgia.

One thing we share:
The world can be a very dark place—and it needs more light.

Key Truth:
Christmas isn’t God yelling at us from heaven to get our act together.
It’s God stepping into the darkness to give us access to Himself.

From Hope to Joy
Over the last three weeks, we’ve followed God’s movement toward weary people:

  • Hope — God will finish what He started

  • Peace — God is with us right now

  • Love — God initiates and invites us to make room

Tonight, we arrive at Joy.

Key Truth:

  • We don’t find joy because life gets easy.

  • We find joy when light enters a dark room and we can see again.

God Comes to Us in the Darkness We Couldn’t Escape
[Luke 2:8–9 NLT]
“That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them.”

Key Truths:

  • The Christmas story begins in the dark—not a palace.

  • Fields. Night. Outsiders. Forgotten people.

  • God does not wait for darkness to lift—He enters it.

God shows up in the middle of the mess to let us know He sees us and is available now.

[Isaiah 9:2 NLT]
“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.”

[John 1:5 NLT]
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

Memorable:
You don’t remove darkness—you introduce light. Jesus is the light.

God Announces Joy Because Salvation Has Arrived
[Luke 2:10–11 NLT]
“The angel reassured them. ‘Don’t be afraid!’ he said. ‘I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today.'”

Key Truths:

  • Circumstances didn’t change, but joy arrived.

  • Joy isn’t rooted in life improving—it’s rooted in rescue coming.

  • This joy is for all people: weary, anxious, broken, doubting.

Joy comes from knowing we are not forgotten and not alone.

[Romans 5:11 NLT]
“So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.”

Jesus Is the Light That Leads Out of Darkness
[John 8:12 NLT]
“I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

Key Truths:

  • Jesus doesn’t show the light—He is the light.

  • Our way through life is not a feeling or philosophy, but a Person.

Where Jesus is present, darkness loses its power.

[Psalm 27:1 NLT]
“The LORD is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid?”

[2 Corinthians 4:6 NLT]
“For God, who said, ‘Let there be light in the darkness,’ has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Application: The Joy of Christmas

  • Jesus entered the darkness of our world to carry the darkness of our sin.

  • He lived the life we couldn’t live.

  • He died the death we deserved.

  • He rose again so light would have the final word.

Key Truth:
The joy of Christmas is not a mood—it’s the good news that God saves, rescues, and adopts.

For those walking in darkness, carrying grief, unsure what they believe, or tired of pretending:
Christmas is not a call to “be better.”
It’s an invitation to come to the Light and let Him push out everything that doesn’t belong.

Candlelight Transition
As we light these candles, we remember:
The light came into the world, spread from person to person, generation to generation—and here we are, pushing back the darkness together.

Closing Truth:
The darkness does not overcome the light.
