Following Jesus won’t always fit neatly with the culture around you. Sometimes what you believe or how you choose to live won’t make sense to the people around you, and that can make it tempting to compromise or simply go along with everyone else. In this message, discover how knowing who you belong to can help you stay grounded in your faith and be okay when following Jesus means you don’t quite fit in

What Do You Do When Your Faith Doesn’t Fit the Culture?

1 Peter, Week 1 — September 13, 2026

Big Idea

Before Peter tells his readers what to do, he tells them who they already are. Your identity, security, and value are found in who God says you are — not in what you do, or in how well you fit in.

Peter wrote to Christians living as social outsiders under Rome, and yet he doesn’t open by teaching them how to fit in. He opens by reminding them they were chosen — the way a family names a child before that child does anything to earn it.

1. You Are Chosen, Even When You Feel Rejected

1 Peter 1:1-2 (NLT) — “This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners… God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy.”

Peter opens with a paradox: rejected by the world, and chosen by God — both at the same time. Your standing with God was never determined by your value to the people around you.

The foreknowledge of the Father, the sanctifying work of the Spirit, and the blood of Jesus guarantee your welcome into God’s family. It was never contingent on your welcome into anyone else’s room, or on your own track record staying clean.

2. You Have a Hope That Can’t Be Destroyed

1 Peter 1:3-5 (NLT) — “…we have a priceless inheritance — an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.”

Peter calls this a “living hope” because it’s tied to a resurrection that already happened, not a promise still waiting to be tested. The word “kept” is a military term — guarded, like a garrison standing watch. Your inheritance can’t be lost, corrupted, or faded.

The world may take, but the Lord gives something that can never be taken. Ever.

3. Your Faith Is Being Proven, Not Punished

1 Peter 1:6-7 (NLT) — “…even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold.”

The trial isn’t evidence God has abandoned you — it’s evidence your faith is real. The smelter’s fire doesn’t create gold; it reveals it.

Your hardest seasons aren’t proof you’ve been abandoned. They’re proof your faith is real.

Application

  • Refuse the temptation to adopt the values of your political party without prayer and biblical instruction.
  • Give till it hurts.
  • Love those who don’t deserve it.
  • Forgive when it doesn’t make sense.

You were called out of darkness to show others how to find the light. That starts with living secure enough in that calling that you no longer need the world’s acceptance to feel like you belong.
