Have you ever felt that because of the things you’ve done there was no way you could talk to God? Maybe you thought He was too angry to listen to you, or maybe you’re own shame and guilt kept you from even trying. In our series Long Story Short, we’ve seen God create a perfect world and environment for mankind to live in, but we’ve also seen mankind decide to try their own way in an attempt to get something better than God provided. In during away from the Creator of all good they found all that was bad. But God promised not to leave them that way. In this week’s message, Pastor Sean shows how Jesus came to do for us what the old rules couldn’t. He didn’t come to just forgive us when we do wrong, but to make us innocent before God once again.

MESSAGE NOTES

Hebrews 10:1-4 – The law couldn’t solve our problem.

  • The animal was good enough to take the guilt (punishment) but not good enough to give us what we needed most – holiness.
  • Like a substitute teacher, not a permanent fix.
  • The sacrifices were temporary but the problem was permanent. We still need to become holy.

God gives us the solution is Hebrews 10:10-18.

  • God’s plan was for us to be made holy.
  • How? Jesus was going to stand in for us.

Jesus gives us immediate access to the presence of God.

Remember Leviticus 16:2. “Warn your brother, Aaron, not to enter the Most Holy Place whenever he chooses. hebrews 10:19-22

  • Exodus 26:33 – “hang the inner curtain from clasps, and put the ark of the covenant in the room behind it. This curtain will separate the Holy Place from the MOST Holy Place.
  • Matthew 27:51 – “at that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from the top to the bottom. Jesus initiates a New Covenant (Hebrews 9:13-15).
  • The New Covenant doesn’t destroy Old Covenant, it completes it. Matthew 5:17, “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.”
  • John the Baptist pointed it out in John 1:29, “Look the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

When God sees me in Judgement, He sees Jesus instead.

  • He forever made perfect by that one offering. (2 Cor 5:21)
  • I finally have what I need – Holiness
  • It is faith in Jesus that makes me right with God (Romans 5:1-2)
  • Heb 11 is a long list of people through history who lived by faith
  • So what does this matter to us? It gives me the strength to live this life right now, without shame, fear, isolation, guilt, and death. (Hebrews 12:1-4)

LONG STORY SHORT – Jesus fulfills the requirements of the law (the first covenant) initiating a new one independent of my performance. But dependent on his and given to me by faith.

God gave His son for me and calls me to give myself back. Why? Love. His holiness in exchange for my sin. Bridging the gap between us and calling me in love to come back to Him.
