“My doubt rarely determines what’s actually true.”
There is BELIEF and UNBELIEF. Doubt is when you move from either side toward the middle. Doubt is a motivator that will eventually lead you to stronger belief or stronger unbelief.
[Matthew 11:2-6]
“John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?” Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen— the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor. And tell him, ‘God blesses those who do not turn away because of me.’”
Jon Bloom – “Stuck in this putrid cell he was assaulted by horrible, accusing thoughts. What if he was wrong? There had been many false prophets in Israel. What made him so sure that Jesus wasn’t a false prophet? What if he had led thousands astray? The thought of being executed for the sake of righteousness and justice, he could bear. But he could not bear the thought that he might have been wrong about Jesus. His one task was to prepare the way of the lord. If he had gotten this wrong, his ministry, and his life would be in vain.”
Three Types Of Doubt:
- Intellectual Doubt – our primary concern is Fact vs Fiction (what’s true?)
- Emotional Doubt – usually associated with pain and comes from disappointment (why isn’t this working?)
- Moral Doubt – tempted to walk away from faith because it is difficult and we don’t WANT it to be true (why can’t I do what I want?)
[Matthew 11:11-12]
“I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is! And from the time John the Baptist began preaching until now, the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people are attacking it.
