Most people want to see God do something real—something that makes a difference in their lives and in the world around them. The story of the first church shows how God often works through ordinary people who are willing to say yes to what He prompts them to do. To The Ends Of The Earth looks at five key moments from the earliest days of the church that reveal how God helps everyday people make a bigger impact than they ever thought possible. And it shows that the story didn’t stop in the first century—God still invites people like us to be part of what He’s doing today.

MESSAGE NOTES

TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH

Week 5: How to Talk About Your Faith
Text: Acts 17:16–34
Big Idea: God sends His people into the world not to win arguments but to win hearts. We don’t withdraw from culture—we enter it with compassion, clarity, and courage so every one, everywhere, has a chance to hear.

Christians See What God Sees

[Acts 17:16]
“Paul… was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city.”

Paul’s mission didn’t begin with a strategy—it began with a stirred heart.
Before he preached, reasoned, or quoted a single philosopher, he felt something.

Key truths:

  • The word “deeply troubled” means stirred, burdened, emotionally shaken.

  • Paul wasn’t angry at Athens—he was heartbroken for Athens.

  • He saw more than idol worshipers; he saw spiritually hungry people searching for answers.

  • The mission of God always begins with compassion, not frustration.

  • Jesus modeled this:
[Matthew 9:36] “He had compassion on them, because they were confused and helpless…”

Memorable:
We don’t reach people well until we see people the way God sees people.

The more your heart breaks for people far from God, the harder it becomes to do nothing.

Christians Start Where People ARE, Not Where We Wish They Were

[Acts 17:22–23]
“Men of Athens, I notice you are very religious… I found an altar ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God… is the one I’m telling you about.”

Paul doesn’t begin with critique—he begins with common ground.

Key truths:

  • Paul builds a bridge, not a barrier.

  • He starts with their culture, their idols, their questions.

  • His sermon here is completely different than the one he preached in Berea—because this audience was different.

  • This is the heart of contextualization: speaking timeless truth in a way people today can actually hear.

[1 Corinthians 9:22–23]
“I try to find common ground with everyone… to save some.”

Paul speaks their language so he can introduce them to his God.

Memorable:
Effective evangelism doesn’t change the message—it changes the starting point.

Christians Speak Truth Clearly and With Compassion

[Acts 17:29–31]
“Since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol… He has set a day for judging the world… and proved who the Judge is by raising Him from the dead.”

Paul doesn’t soften the gospel.
He delivers the essentials with clarity and courage:

  • There is one true God.

  • Idols can’t save.

  • Judgment is coming.

  • Jesus has risen.

  • Everyone must repent.

And he communicates all of it with compassion—not arrogance.

Responses in Athens:

  • Some mocked

  • Some were curious

  • Some believed

We don’t control outcomes. We control obedience.

Memorable:
Compassion gives us the heart to speak; courage gives us the strength to say it.

Application — Take Your Next Step

Simple take-home practices for this week:

1. Ask God to help you see people the way He sees them.

Your coworkers, neighbors, friends—they are spiritually searching, not spiritually hopeless.

2. Start where they actually are.

Ask questions. Listen. Talk like a real person. Be a friend before being a teacher.

3. Speak truth clearly—and gently.

Share your story. Ask where they are with God. Invite them to join you next weekend.
Then trust God with the results.

Closing Truth

Through the Every One initiative we commit to:

  • Train more Barnabases

  • Send more Pauls

  • Raise more leaders

  • Reach more towns

  • Help more New Englanders find their way back to God

Everyone has a mission.
Everyone has a role.
Every One matters.

Let’s pray.
