Having a pure heart often feels impossible with all the temptations and brokenness around us. This struggle can cause us to feel discouraged and unworthy or tempt us to throw in the towel and allow our hearts to become calloused and dirty. So how can we actually experience purity of heart like Jesus teaches? In this video, we see that purity of heart does not equal perfection, but rather can be obtained through practical habits to guard your heart, change your focus, obey God’s voice within you. When we live this way, we can experience the blessing and peace God intends for us.

MESSAGE NOTES

[Matthew 5:1-8]

5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. 6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. 7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.

A more literal translation of Matthew 5:8 would be: “Blessed are the clean in heart, for they shall see God.”

Distinctive For Pure In Heart:

FREE FROM SIN

FULLY DEVOTED TO GOD

[James 4:8]

“Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.”

“Blessed are the pure in heart: In the ancient Greek, the phrase pure of heart has the idea of straightness, honesty, and clarity. There can be two ideas connected to this. One is of inner moral purity as opposed to the image of purity or ceremonial purity. The other idea is of a single, undivided heart — those who are utterly sincere and not divided in their devotion and commitment to God.” – David Guzik

MOTIVATED BY LOVE

[1 Timothy 1:5]

“The purpose of my instruction is that all believers will be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.“

THE PURE IN HEART WILL SEE GOD

“For they shall see God: In this, the pure of heart receive the most wonderful reward. They shall enjoy greater intimacy with God than they could have imagined. The polluting sins of covetousness, oppression, lust, and chosen deception have a definite blinding effect upon a person; and the one pure of heart is freer from these pollutions.” – David Guzik
