Anxiety has a way of lingering—especially when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. Many of us believe things will eventually get better, but still struggle to find peace in the middle of what we’re carrying right now. In this message from The Weary World Rejoices, Sean Sears shares how real peace doesn’t come from having everything figured out, but from trusting God in the middle of what we can’t control. Through the Christmas story, you’ll see how God meets anxious, weary people with His presence and invites us to release the weight we were never meant to carry.

MESSAGE NOTES

THE WEARY WORLD REJOICES
Week 2: Peace for the Anxious

Big Idea: Peace is not found by controlling our circumstances, but by trusting the God who is with us and carries what we cannot.

God Meets Us in Our Anxiety
[Luke 1:26–33 NLT]
“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth… ‘Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!’… ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary… You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus… And he will reign… and his Kingdom will never end!’”

Key Truths:

  • Mary did not choose her situation, timing, or consequences.

  • Before God gives explanations, He gives presence.

  • Peace does not begin with knowledge—it begins with presence.

  • Peace begins when you realize God is with you in what you haven’t figured out.

Memorable:
Peace does not begin with answers. Peace begins with presence.

God Meets Anxious People Where They Are

Old Testament Pictures of God’s Nearness:

  • Hagar — “The God who sees me” (Genesis 16)

  • Elijah — Exhausted and afraid, God meets him in weakness (1 Kings 19)

  • David — “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, you are with me” (Psalm 23)

Scripture Truths:
[Psalm 148 NLT]
“The LORD is near to all who call on him.”

[2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT]
“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”

[Isaiah 26:3 NLT]
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you.”

Key Truth:
God meets every version of anxiety with Himself.

Jesus Carries What We Were Never Meant to Hold
[Matthew 6:25–27 NLT]
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life… Look at the birds… your heavenly Father feeds them… Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”

Key Truths:

  • Jesus is not minimizing anxiety—He is redefining responsibility.

  • Anxiety grows when we try to control what we were never meant to control:

    • outcomes

    • people

    • timing

    • the future

    • opinions

[1 Peter 5:7 NLT]
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

[Philippians 4:7 NLT]
“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Memorable:
We have no peace because we have control issues.

Peace Comes Through Trust, Not Control
[Luke 1:38 NLT]
“I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”

Key Truths:

  • This was not Mary giving up—it was Mary laying it down.

  • Peace replaces anxiety when we loosen our grip on control.

  • She couldn’t understand the plan or control the outcome—but she could trust God.

[Isaiah 26:3 NLT]
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you.”

[Philippians 4:6–7 NLT]
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything… Then you will experience God’s peace…”

[John 14:27 NLT]
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart… So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

Memorable:
Peace comes from surrender.

Application: Stepping Into Peace

  • Release Control: Name what you’re gripping too tightly and place it in God’s hands.

  • Choose Trust: Peace is promised not to those who figure everything out, but to those who trust.

  • Come to Jesus: Anxiety loses power when we stop carrying life alone.

[Matthew 11:28 NLT]
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Closing Truth:
Peace is not the absence of anxiety—it is the presence of Jesus.
We find peace today not by controlling tomorrow, but by trusting the God who holds both.
