Prayer and Fasting

Big Idea: Prayer and fasting are like a “Till Failure” set for your soul. They push you past comfort, past self-reliance, to the point where you rely fully on God’s strength.

Key Points:

Prayer and Fasting Explained

Prayer is talking to God and learning how to listen. It isn’t a way of getting God to do what we want, or a way to impress God.

[1 Thessalonians 5:17] “Pray without ceasing.”

Fasting is choosing to go without something, usually food. It’s a mindful decision to pursue intimacy with God through sacrifice.

[Psalm 63:1] “My soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”

  • Fasting is how we say, ‘God, I want You more than I want that thing’
  • Fasting is putting the world around us on Mute, so that we can hear God more clearly

“Prayer and Fasting allow us the opportunity to reflect on our circumstances and needs in light of who God is.”

Prayer and Fasting are Responsive

[1 John 4:19] “We love because He first loved us.”

  • Prayer and Fasting aren’t things we have to do — it’s an invitation from God because of what Jesus has done
  • God’s not waiting for you to do a bunch of things, He’s just waiting for you to reach out

“You’re not making a call, God’s already on the line, just pick it up.”

“Fasting starves the things that are starving us.”

Prayer and Fasting Rewire

[Psalm 37:4] “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”

[Philippians 2:13] “God is already working in you—giving you both the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.”

  • These aren’t just ways to connect with God in the moment—they actually change us over time
  • When you train your soul to delight in Him, He rewires what you want
  • You stop asking, “God, bless what I’m doing,” and you start praying, “God, help me want what You’re doing”

“Fasting and prayer don’t make God love you more—they make you love Him more.”

Next Steps:

“Your job isn’t to impress Him, It’s to press into Him”

  • Prioritize praying twice a day — at the beginning and end of your day
  • Give up your go-to comfort (food fast or digital fast) for 24 hours and say “God meet me in the silence”

“You don’t train because you’re already strong—you train because you’re not, and you know you need Him.”
