MESSAGE NOTES

[John 14:15-20, 23-26]

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

23 Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

[Genesis 1:1-2] “In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. The Earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.“

[Genesis 1:26] says, “Then God said, ‘Let US make human beings in OUR image, to be like us.”

[John 16:5-8]

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”

There are three things we know about the Holy Spirit

  • He is the presence of God IN me
  • He is the GIFT of God FOR me
  • He is the WORK of God THROUGH me

[Ephesians 4:30]

“And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.”

[Philippians 2:13]

“for God is working in you, giving you the desire, and the power to do it pleases him.“

Three ways the Holy Spirit will lead me to please God

  1. The word of God
  2. The counsel of Other Christians
  3. Prompting toward selflessness of generosity

There are two things that Holy Spirit will never do:

  1. Lead you contrary to the Word of God in any way
  2. Tempt you to sin against God or others

How to know what God wants them to do:

  • Pray first (confess sin and ask for direction)
  • What does the Bible say?
  • What do other godly people say?
  • What do you WANT to do now? Then do it

[John 6:44]

“For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.”
