Faith That Pleases God

[Hebrews 11:6] “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

Two requirements:

  1. Believe God exists
  2. Believe He rewards sincere seekers

Four Aspects of Faith

  1. Faith Trusts God’s Control (Sovereignty)

[Hebrews 11:1-3] “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.”

Key Points:

  • Faith provides confidence without visible proof
  • Creation demonstrates God’s power
  • If God created everything, nothing is beyond His control
  1. Faith Gives God Our Best

[Hebrews 11:4] “It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts.”

[Proverbs 3:9] “Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.”

Contrast between:

  • Cain: “some” of his crops
  • Abel: “best of the firstborn”
  1. Faith Prioritizes Time with God

[Hebrews 11:5] “It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying–‘he disappeared, because God took him.’ For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God.”

[Micah 6:8] “The LORD has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”

  1. Faith Is Obedient to God

[Hebrews 11:7-8] “It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before… It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going.”

[1 John 2:3-4] “And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. If someone claims, ‘I know God,’ but doesn’t obey God’s commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth.”

Application

Self-examination questions:

  1. How would you describe your relationship with God?
  2. What priority does God have in your life?
    • In your money
    • In your time
  3. In what area of your life are you disobedient?
    • Root causes:
      • Fear God won’t come through
      • Pride in personal control

“The question isn’t if you ‘believe’ God. The question is if you believe God enough to trust God.”
