What happens when I know the right thing to do and choose not to? Is it possible for me to be so far from God that there’s no coming back? And when my life feels like a sinking ship, what should be my next move?

MESSAGE NOTES

“The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” [Jonah 1:1-2]

“But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish. [Jonah 1:3]

Why did Jonah go in the opposite direction?

  • He did NOT want the Ninevites to be forgiven
  • He DEFINITELY didn’t want to be the one to tell them how

YOUR CALLING IS NOT ABOUT YOU, IT’S ABOUT GOD

This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time. [1 Tim 2:3-6]

This is not about what I want, what Jonah wants, or what you want. It’s about what God wants.

YOU CAN ALWAYS RUN FROM DOING WHAT’S RIGHT BUT YOU CAN’T OUTRUN GOD

But my people would not listen to me. They kept doing whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward. [Jer 7:24]

When we run, what happens?

But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart. Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. But all this time Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold. So the captain went down after him. “How can you sleep at a time like this?” he shouted. “Get up and pray to your god! Maybe he will pay attention to us and spare our lives.” [Jonah 1:4-6]

Sometimes when we run from God, we’re oblivious to the damage we cause others

Then the crew cast lots to see which of them had offended the gods and caused the terrible storm. When they did this, the lots identified Jonah as the culprit. “Why has this awful storm come down on us?” they demanded. “Who are you? What is your line of work? What country are you from? What is your nationality?” Jonah answered, “I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.” The sailors were terrified when they heard this, for he had already told them he was running away from the Lord. “Oh, why did you do it?” they groaned.  And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, “What should we do to you to stop this storm?” “Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.” Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it. Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God. “O Lord,” they pleaded, “don’t make us die for this man’s sin. And don’t hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.” Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once!” [Jonah 1:7-15]

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.” [Hebrews 12:5-8]

If you feel as though you’re in a sinking ship, maybe God is just trying to get your attention.

  1. Who is your Nineveh? Who would you never want to see repent?
  2. If you see yourself as Nineveh in need of fixing up, repent!
  3. If God is trying to get your attention, give it to him!
