How many times have you tried to turn over a new leaf only to find yourself doing the same old things? Have you pleaded with God that you would never ever do that things again if only He would forgive you and you wouldn’t get caught? Do you feel like your life needs a restart? In this series Head Heart Hands, we see that our actions are driven by how we feel and how we feel is driven by how we think. So before we try to turn over the next new leaf, we need to focus on first on changing how we think. This week, Pastor Sean talks about how if we can change the way we think, we can change our lives and he gives us 2 ways that we can begin to change the way that we think.

MESSAGE NOTES

2 Corinthians 5:17

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

We have a role to play in God changing our lives.

Think – Feel – Do

  1. Changed lives come from changed minds
  2. Minds are changed by taking thoughts captive
  3. Corrupt thinking should be replaced with truth.

Take Your Thoughts Captive And Your Mind Will Change

  • You can’t remove/erase the bad thoughts but you can call it out.
  • Our minds are full of thoughts taking up real estate.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

Hebrews 12:1-4

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.[a] Because of the joy[b] awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people;[c] then you won’t become weary and give up. After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin.

Corrupt Thinking Should Be Replaced With Truth

Ephesians 4:21-24

Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Romans 8:5-8

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.

John 8:32

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
